Abstract

We demonstrate the realization of an electron bunch compressor (1GeV) using a double emittance exchanger (EEX). We compare the results of our scheme with a bunch compressor realized via chicane considering the nonlinear dynamics, Coherent Synchrotron Radiation (CSR) and Space Charge effects (CS). We analyze the Eigen-emittances evolution to minimize the emittance growth. We introduce the alternative version of an EEX with reduced amount of bending magnets to minimize the CSR effects impact.

Summary

We demonstrate the alternative realization of a bunch compressor (specifically the second bunch compressor for the MaRIE XFEL beamline, 1GeV electron energy) using a double emittance exchanger and a telescope in the transversal phase space. We compare the results of our scheme with a traditional scheme of a bunch compressor realized via chicane taking into account the nonlinear dynamics, Coherent Synchrotron Radiation (CSR) and Space Charge (CS) effects. In particular, we use Elegant code for tracking particles through the beam line and analyze the Eigen-emittances evolution to separate influence of the CSR/SC effects from the nonlinear dynamics effects. We optimize the scheme parameters to reach the desirable compression factor and minimize the emittance growth. We observe the dominance of the CSR-effects in our scheme resulting in critical emittance growth and introduce the alternative version of an emittance exchanger with reduced amount of bending magnets to minimize the CSR effects impact.
